My letter to Lego

At the age of six, I wrote the Lego corporation to beg them to make a Lego cruise ship. I was, at the time, obsessed with cruise ships. Here is the full text of that letter.

Dear LEGO Company:

I am Stephen Rintoul. I am 6 1/2 years old and I really
like Legos. I have played with them a lot for about 3
years. I have a very good idea for you.

I want you to invent some sort of Lego cruise ship. I am
thinking of the sort of crise thip you go on for a
vacation. It would need to be pretty big and I am sending a
brochure with this letter with a picture of the ship I want
you to make. It doesn't have to be just like it, but it
will give you the idea.

I have some suggestions of things to put on the ship that
would make it fun to play with. Here is a list:

  1) life saver rings & jackets
  2) swimming pool and kid's splash pool
  3) life boats
  4) captain with computer & steering wheel in cabin on
  top of the boat
  5) sleeping cabins with beds
  6) restaurant with cook, waiter, tables, & glasses
  7) fishing poles for deep sea fishing
  8) sharks
  9) lots of people
  10) deck benches
  11) movie theater with movie screen
  12) video cameras for some of the people
  13) make it so it can really float in the bathtub

I would like to know what you think about my idea. If you
make this cruise ship, then could you let me have one for
free for giving you the idea? Please write back to answer
me. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Stephen Rintoul

I received a letter in return about one month later telling me that Lego couldn't accept suggestions from customers for legal reasons. They assured me, though, that they had their own panel of creative individuals cooking up a batch of really cool Lego sets. They included a $20 coupon for their brand-new MindStorms line, for which I was far too young at the time.
