Hanes Theatre at Chapel Hill High School
Stephen Rintoul, Lighting Designer
This is the Hanes show that had the most potential and still didn't quite accomplish its goals. It wasn't our fault, though, that this one didn't work. A snow storm snowed out our Thursday and Friday performances, as well as all of the last-minute technical work that happened on those days. As a result, the show was on Saturday where it needed to have surpassed on Thursday. The actors were unused to their live audience, and so the entire show was delivered fairly sloppily. This is to be expected, though, and usually occurs the first time any cast meets the audience.
On the technical side, a miracle took place. The Saturday tech call was 12 noon, and the techies all arrived and put finishing touches all over the set. Painting was completed, props were built, paintings were put on the walls, chandelier bulbs were replaced, and rough edges were smoothed out. The play went from completely unready to fairly decent in about six hours, with the diligent work of 15+ techies.
That accomplishment was notable, but the play was nevertheless not among the best of Hanes Theatre.
Original document:
Hanes Theatre at my high school is producing The Importance of Being Earnest in late February. (A side note: did you realize that this is one of those special 29-day Februarys? I think it's awesome.)
The play will inevitably be hilarious, simply by virtue of being a comedy. Incidentally, it will also (hopefully) have awesome, awesome lighting. That's right, I've been given the job of Lighting Designer for this production. I am eager to gain experience with this discipline during the run of the show. The only other show that I've designed the lighting for was Nunsense last year, and it was supposed to look childish (or more specifically, it was supposed to look like a bunch of nuns put it together). This gave me a bigger margin to mess up than does Earnest. I feel confident in my ability to design everything adequately, however.
The point of all of this, though, is that you simply must come see this play. I'm pushing it strongly because I know that it will be splendid. Information is posted on the Hanes Theatre website. Just click on Upcoming Events and there will be information. Just so you know, tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and children. And to quote, "Seating for Theatre Productions is reserved. Please call (919) 969-2461 for reservations starting a week before the performance." Well, as long as I'm telling you all this information, I might as well do it right.
